Abstract: This paper analyses the possibilities of using radio frequency measurements for localising patients in hospital environments or similar. Various countries are facing a rise in healthcare expenditures due to a rising elderly population and decreasing birth rates. Hence, the medical sector demands for solutions to reduce costs in healthcare while increasing the patients quality of life. Sensor networks are seen as a technological basis for providing solutions like permanent health monitoring for high-risk patients. Most of these solutions require the possibility of locating the patient in alarm cases. This paper provides a survey of the state of the art and discusses the possibility of developing a round trip time (RTT) based localisation system.
